Leadership
Experience is nice, but what we’re looking for is drive and passion; the ability to build relationships and provide exceptional service to our clients. Some of this can be learned, but we believe most of it is already in you – it’s part of your make up and personality. One of our top salespeople began as our receptionist, and many others have developed within our business. Most of our senior salespeople and managers have been with us for over 15 years. We are not a formula driven franchise operation, but a centred, community – aware agency – we engender loyalty from clients and within our own family.

When did you start working for Gary J Smith?
I started working as a receptionist at GJS 15 years ago when I was 20 years old. From here I moved into a sales assistant role working alongside the sales team. Within a couple of years, I began working in a team with John Laycock as his sales associate and we really enjoyed working together for several years. For the last 7 years, I have really enjoyed working as a successful solo agent which was my ultimate goal when I first started my real estate career.
Why did you decide to work in real estate?
My stepdad, John Laycock began working with Gary in the very early days of when the business first opened and being a family grown business, I always had an interest for Real Estate. John taught me a lot of what I know today!
What do you love about your job and working at Gary J Smith?
I’ve really enjoyed working for the GJS family, the company have an extremely good reputation of being loyal, trusting and honest. They have great values that I believe in which I really believe has helped grow the company to where it is today. 50+ years in business is a huge achievement for a local business in Adelaide, so they must be doing a lot of things right! I love my job; I have a wonderful client database that I’m fortunate enough to have built over many years so majority of my business now is past clients and personal referrals. I’ve always enjoyed building relationships with people and helping guide them into the next stage of their lives. Being chosen to sell someone’s home, potentially their biggest asset is a huge privilege and I love that I can be a part of that chapter with them.
Why is Gary J Smith different from other agencies?
GJS is different from most other agencies in that they are a family business and hold strong to their values. They pride themselves in what they do and really have their clients’ best interests at heart. For them, I think it’s also about building a team of great staff that fit the ‘family portrait’ who work really well together and enjoy what they do.
What have been some of your achievements in your career?
I’m very grateful for achieving some wonderful awards through GJS which have included salesperson of the Year in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020. I have also been rated as the Number 1 Agent selling against other real estate companies in my core area (Clovelly Park) for 7 consecutive years now. This year I have begun to build my own team with Belinda Issacs as my sales associate where we can continue to provide a professional and outstanding service to our clients.
